Octoshape Testing And Debugging/Troubleshooting

PURPOSE

A few steps to help troubleshoot your installation of the Octoshape application.  This article covers installation issues, debugging play back issues, antivirus conflict issues, general streaming quality issues with the Octoshape Client and Broadcasting Application.

 

 

PREREQUISITE

  1. Octoshape application
  2. Octoshape streams

 

 

CONTENT

  1. Octoshape Test Player: this is a versatile test player that could help you troubleshoot play out issues.
    1. If your Octoshape stream plays on the OTP then you'll know there is a problem with your specific player stream calls.
    2. The prefix is octoshape://streams.octoshape.net/

    6. Appending ?octoshapelog=debug to the end of the url as such: http://demo.octoshape.com/arplayer3/?octoshapelog=debug will provide debug information that could help in the troubleshooting process.  Copying the output into a ticket will be helpful for support to assist in the process.
  2. Debugging log on Octoshape's IHDP or Flash SDKs you could  use append, ?octoshapelog=debug to gather additional debug information.

    4. Copy the debug output and send the information to Akamai Technical Support by opening a new case, if you are still experiencing play out issues.
  3. Technical log capturing. On occasions in highly restricted corporate environment where video and or ports are highly controlled please follow our Log Capturing Guide to assist the troubleshooting process.
  4. Ports. The UDP/TCP port 8247 should be open.  In addition, the following ports open will provide the most optimal configuration
    • TCP: 80, 443, 8247
    • UDP: 554, 5060, 6970, 8247
  5. Firewall or Anti-virus applications.  Please ensure the Octoshape Streaming Service application is not blocked by your local firewall or antivirus application.
    • Various anti-virus applications like Palo Alto (in "strict" mode), McAfee in certain mode or configurations will block the Octoshape client/application.  Typically, the most stringent mode, i.e. lockdown mode is where antivirus programs will prevent Octoshape from streaming.  Following this guide for the proper antivirus application configuration for using Octoshape.
  6. PC/Mac Client Streaming Quality Issues
    • Check CPU resources
      • ensure the machine is operating under 70% utilization.  With today's high bit rate streams, 2 mbps and above machines without hardware acceleration (i.e. graphics engine) may cause streaming issues.
      • close unnecessary applications on the machine, especially graphics programs or player imbedded in browsers.
    • Check Memory resources
      • memory is allocated for the streaming bytes.  If there is insufficient memory a high amount of paging will occur which will cause streaming quality issues.
      • close unnecessary applications on the machine, especially graphics programs or player imbedded in browsers.
    • Check Applications
      • Flash player by Adobe is a single threaded process.  Having more than one Flash player rendering graphics or other Flash applications will cause streaming quality issues.
      • close Flash-based applications, especially Flash player imbedded in browsers.
    • Check an Octoshape Reference Stream
      • Check any of the listed streams in the test player (listed above).
      • Check the Octoshape Showcase Player on the Octoshape Corporate Site.

  • Adobe's latest Flash player is typically automatically updated.  If necessary, you may install the latest versions from here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
