ExoPlayer was integrated into the AMP SDK to give our users an alternate decoding method, and a chance to try the playback of two new online video streaming standards: MPEG-Dash and Smooth Streaming.

Here are some of the benefits of integrating the AMP SDK, instead of directly using ExoPlayer:

  • Support
    • A dedicated team on Akamai to troubleshoot problems reported by customers.
    • Android developers working not only in customer support, but also working on improvements and new features.
  • Fast integration and API simplicity
    • AMP's learning curve is very low, due to an almost "drag and drop" integration and more intuitive methods available to use.
  • Contributions to OSS
    • Using our team’s knowledge in the player business to propose fixes or even improvements for ExoPlayer. Working on the legal arrangements to contribute to the Open Source Community.
  • Support for older Android versions
