What are the different options to create custom dimensions in Media Analytics?
A dimension is a structure that categorizes the metrics (facts and measures) in order to enable users to answer business questions. Media Analytics offers a host of Standard Dimensions, and lets the customers configure their own Custom Dimensions.
Examples of Standard Dimensions are: Country, City, Time, Delivery Format, Connection Speed etc. (For a complete list, refer the Media Analytics Metrics & Dimensions documentation.)
Custom Dimensions give the power in the hands of our customers, to slice and dice the data they way their business demands. There are multiple ways to create Custom Dimensions:
Using the setData API in the Media Analytics Plugin
Customers who have integrated the Media Analytics Plugin with their media players (preferred way to use Media Analytics), can use the setData API to pass the dimension name and value to the Media Analytics system.
Extract from the Stream URL
Customers who are using the Server-side version of Media Analytics (including Download Analytics), can use any portion of the URL string (protocol, domain, stem, file, query string etc.) to use as a Custom Dimension. The self-service Media Analytics interface provides multiple ways to do this, including the use of regular expressions for advanced use-cases.
Extract from the Referrer URL
Similar to the one above, customers may also use the referrer URL to extract any portion and use as a Custom Dimension.
