I see very few companies offer CDN services. I assume it is a costly and challenging business. I am just curious, how many millions to set up a content delivery network (CDN) from scratch?
I don't think I could even put a number on it but I don't think building an Akamai scale CDN from scratch would even be a viable business idea. To get the global coverage the time needed to secure the necessary business partnerships and infrastructure and operational side would put you so far behind the competition you'd never catch up.
You'd have to start small and specialised, probably in one very specific geographic region and offer a very competitive rate to local users or features others can't provide.
I think there's more money to be made partnering with CDN's such as Akamai as a reseller and offering Value Added services on top.
